The experimental drug, alemtuzumab, helped patients participating in a study, experts said. The results showed that flare-ups, and hence, the resulting brain lesions, were reduced in the brain, spinal cord, and optic centers.
According to The Daily Oklahoman, the new drug produced results 49 per cent better than the drug Rebif, now in use for MS patients. The study involved more than 800 patients around the country.
The new drug, which will be called Lemtrada, could be available as early as the end of 2012, according to Dr. Gabriel Pardo of the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundtions's Multiple Sclerosis Center of Excellence in Oklahoma City.
